QUICK FAQS FOR SAE 4130 STEEL

What is the difference between AISI 4130 and SAE 4130?

SAE 4130 and AISI 4130 belong to different associations. Both are essentially 4130 steel, so in practical applications, there is basically no difference in treatment.

4130 Steel VS 30CrMoA

4130 is an American steel grade, while 30CrMoA is a Chinese steel grade. As can be seen from the table below, the chemical compositions of the two are very similar, and they belong to the chromium-molybdenum series of low-alloy high-strength structural steels.

GradeCSiMnPSCrMo
41300.28-0.330.15-0.350.4-0.6≤0.035≤0.040.8-1.10.15-0.25
30CrMoA 0.26-0.34 0.17-0.37 0.4-0.7 ≤0.035 ≤0.035 0.8-1.1 0.15-0.25

This type of steel is usually used in the oil and gas field. There are two performance requirements for 4130 in the quenched and tempered condition: the minimum yield strength is 60K (414Mpa) and 75K (517Mpa).

What does the commonly mentioned 4130 75K mean?

4130 75K means that after quenching and tempering, the yield strength of 4130 steel must reach a minimum of 75K (517Mpa).

In API 6A, there is not only one requirement for yield strength, but also other requirements, as shown in the table below.

What is the processing performance of 4130 steel?

4130 steel has good hot and cold processing performance‌, and can be processed by cutting, stamping, cold drawing, welding, rolling, forging and other processing methods, which enables manufacturers to manufacture various complex parts to meet the needs of different projects.

In addition, 4130 steel has excellent heat treatment performance. Through different heat treatment processes, the performance of 4130 steel is further improved.
